Quality improvement in the production of heated windscreens

Solutions K Fallstudien K Quality improvement in the production of heated windscreens

Initial situation

Pilkington Automotive, part of the NSG Group, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of glass and glass products, supplies, among other things, heated windscreens to all major car manufacturers. The task is to detect hotspots on printed circuits inside the windshields that make up the heating system. A hotspot indicates that the heating system is defective and may no longer function properly after installation.

Implementation

The system includes the installation of a Teledyne FLIR A700 camera above the production line and the connection to a PC running the aku.visionManager®. This software processes the data and displays the resulting thermal images with error graphics on a monitor for operators to review.

A small amount of voltage is passed through the circuits while the images are being captured. If the heating system is working as it should, the circuit will be evenly lit. However, if the circuit is faulty, a hotspot appears on the thermal image.

Parameters

  • Field of view: 300 to 400 mm
  • Thermal resolution: 640×480 pixel detector

Customer benefits

Defective windscreens can be easily identified and removed from the line. In addition, Pilkington’s defect pattern can be analyzed in order to further optimize the production process in the future.

The customer receives a complete solution that guarantees consistent quality and prevents costly recalls.
