Initial situation

Due to the increased quality demands of customers, tire manufacturers are required to apply information to their products and verify it. In addition, there is a constantly increasing number of product variants, which poses new challenges for internal logistics. Tires go through a variety of testing processes until they are finally finished. The ID of the tire is summarized in a barcode.

This ID represents process-relevant data collected during production. In addition, QR and DOT codes and the so-called match points (color points) of the tire must be recorded and entered into the database. Depending on the manufacturer, this information is printed on the outside and/or inside of the tire.

Implementation

Different industrial image acquisition methods are used to capture the features.
2D area sensors record the barcode; 3D laser triangulation is used to detect the DOT code; Color LineScan cameras capture the QR code and color points.

The tires are transported lying down and are detected on both sides above or below the sensors during the linear movement. Additional handling of the tires such as turning or rotating is not necessary. The deep learning algorithms working in the background recognize the respective features and evaluate them very quickly.
