Laser triangulation
Check several object properties at the same time
Triangulation is the measurement of distance by calculating angles. When it comes to speed and versatility, this process is ideal and the ultimate solution, especially for demanding applications. Laser triangulation is a measurement method based on trigonometry that is continuous and is therefore ideal for measuring distances on moving objects.
Measure object contour, height and volume and detect contour errors
The object contour is determined by means of laser triangulation; from this, object height, shape and volume can be measured, contour errors detected and localized and different qualities classified. Laser triangulation combines several methods at the same time, because 2D data also provides information about brightness and gloss in addition to 3D information.
A camera positioned at a known angle to the laser captures images of the laser line, which is deformed by the object geometry. This allows the deviations of the laser line to be determined at any time when the test object passes the laser beam. Height profiles are created at a specified clock rate. These height profiles are the basis for a three-dimensional image. The deviation of each point from the undeformed laser beam serves as height information from which a 3D image is generated. A prerequisite for the use of laser triangulation technology is that the test object moves relative to the camera and laser.
Application fields
- Shape and contour control
- Location and position detection
